Due to its high prevalence, physicians are urging individuals to look out for skin cancer symptoms so victims can be diagnosed in early stages.

If melanoma, basil cell carcinoma, or any other type of cancer runs in your family, you should know what to look so you can check yourself frequently. Read through the most common symptoms so you can have a biopsy performed immediately.

Where Will You See Skin Cancer Symptoms?

There are more than 3.5 million different types of skin cancers. When you are looking for signs of cancer, you should look at areas that are most exposed to the sun first. The most common areas for cancer to appear are on the neck, face, lips, ears, scalp, arms, hands, and legs.

Rare forms of skin cancer can form almost anywhere on your body. Make sure you are looking for signs of cancer everywhere after you have checked common areas.

There are some forms that are more common than others. Basal cell carcinoma, for example, often forms in sun-exposed areas of the body. It will look like a flat lesions that is the same color as your flesh. It may also appear to be a waxy bump on the skin.

Squamous cell carcinoma will form in similar areas, however, the lesions will have a scaly or crusted surface. If you notice brown spots on your body with freckles or a mole that changes in size or color, it could be a sign of melanoma.

Lesions with red, white and blue borders are also often classified as melanoma.

Talk to Your Doctor if You Notice Skin Cancer Symptoms

If you notice any changes in your skin, you should consult a doctor immediately for a biopsy. If caught early, skin cancer is treatable.

The doctor will examine your lesions or moles, extra a portion of the skin for a biopsy, and advise you of your options if it is found that you do have skin cancer.

Typically, skin cancer is found on the face, scalp, neck, chest, arms, hands, lips, and ears although it is also sometimes found on the legs of women.

This type of cancer can occur regardless of the skin’s shade and there are three common forms of this cancer.

Skin Cancer Symptoms on the Body

Basal cell cancer symptoms include a flat flesh-colored lesion or a brown lesion that looks like a scar, or a waxy or pearly lump. The most common areas for this type of cancer are the scalp, face, and ears.

Common on the face, ears, hands, and lips are squamous cell carcinomas. Some of the skin cancer symptoms of this variation include a flat lesion that has a crusted surface, or a hard red nodule.

Melanoma skin cancer symptoms include a large brown spot that features darker speckles; an existing mole that changes shape, size, color, or begins bleeding; a lesion with an irregular border; or a dark lesion that appears on the fingertips, toes, palms of hands, soles of the feet, or on the mucous membranes. This is the most dangerous form of skin cancer.

It can present as an existing mole that suddenly changes or grows, a group of dark, shiny bumps that are firm to the touch, any mole bigger than a pencil eraser, or a dark spot with irregular edges and different colorations.

Greatest Risk for Developing Skin Cancer Symptoms

People who have spent a great deal of time in the sun; have light skin, light eyes and light hair; and people who have a family history of skin cancer should know the symptoms. This cancer usually grows with no pain, but there may be pain.

People need to be familiar with the various freckles, moles, and colorations on their skin and should check these marks at least once a year for any changes. If you notice anything that causes you concern, you should see your doctor and have it checked out.

Properly known as skin neoplasm, skin cancer symptoms begin as a malignant skin growth that affects different types of skin cells.

Its three most common types are called basal cell cancer, squamous cell cancer and melanoma. Of these, melanoma is less common and deadlier. The other two types are named after the skin cells affected by the malignant outgrowths for that type of cancer.

Skin Cancer Symptoms: Different From Other Cancers

Skin cancer is unlike other types of cancers in the way its signs and symptoms can be detected by a visual inspection of the skin. Its symptoms differ from one type of cancer to another. Here we mention the symptoms and signs of the three most common types of skin cancer.

Eight out of ten cancers of the skin are basal cell carcinomas. Basal cells are found in the lowest layer of the epidermis. Basal cell carcinomas usually develop on areas of skin that are exposed to sun, especially neck, head, face, ears, shoulders, hands and back.

Malignant basal cell outgrowths look like small, shiny, pink or red lumps that grow slowly. Sometimes, you can see small blood vessels within the outgrowths. If they are not detected in time, they start to bleed and develop into an ulcer.

Squamous cell cancer usually starts as a red or pink thickened patch of sun-exposed skin. They are usually hard or scaly on the surface, and in time may start to bleed and develop into an ulcer. When left untreated, the squamous cell carcinoma may develop into a large mass of skin outgrowth.

Skin Cancer Symptoms To Look For

Melanoma is less common than the two types discussed above, but it is also the deadliest of the three. Unlike the other two types discussed above, it can develop in parts of the body that are not usually exposed to the sun. Melanomas are usually brown or black lesions; however, there are some types of melanomas that are fleshy, red or pink in colour.

The latter are a more aggressive form of the melanoma, and are called amelanotic melanomas. Another sign of melanoma is the emergence of a new mole anywhere in your body, or the change in shape, colour or size of any old mole.

By carrying out regular inspection of your body using the skin cancer symptoms mentioned here, you can make sure that you have ample time to take care of any cancer that may dare to come within a hair’s breadth of your body.

However, even though you should know what to look for, you should also be aware that some symptoms may not necessarily mean you have cancer.

You should still see a physician if you find anything out of the ordinary on your skin just as a precaution.

Understanding Skin Cancer Symptoms

You can start by looking for some of the most common symptoms associated with skin cancer. For instance, you should always look carefully at any moles you have on your skin.

If they change in either shape, size, colour or texture, you could have a cancer condition. You also want to see if the moles bleed as this can be a sign. You should also look for waxy or pearly bumps because this can be a sign.

Other symptoms can include lesions that look like brown scars or appear flat and flesh coloured. You also want to notice where these kinds of symptoms occur because this can be an indication of the kind of cancer present.

These lesions are most likely to appear on the ears, face and/or scalp, areas exposed to the sun. However, moles that are frequently linked to melanoma can appear anywhere on the body.

Skin Cancer Symptoms in all Shapes and Sizes

Symptoms of squamous cell carcinoma are also most likely to appear on the areas of your body that have been exposed to the sun such as the ears, hands, face and lips. These symptoms include flat lesions with crusty or scaly surfaces and nodules that are red and hard.

Lesions that are dark coloured and appear on areas not exposed to the sun may also be a symptom of melanoma.

There are other kinds of skin cancer symptoms that may signal rare forms of cancer such as Kaposi sarcoma, merkel cell carcinoma and sebaceous gland carcinoma. Symptoms may vary according to many different factors such as family history and any previous experience with cancer.

It may also affect you differently depending upon your skin colour. In any case, you need to look for inconsistencies in your skin.

The propensity for tanning and outdoor activities has led to a growing concern about cancer and its development, so understanding skin cancer symptoms is imperative.

While the literature on preventative measures against this disease has been prevalent in the last few decades, people are still taking risks when it comes to their skin.

Individuals are choosing to go outdoors without sunscreen and are partaking in hours of tanning and sunbathing. These risky behaviours are contributing to a nonchalant attitude and an increase in the diagnoses of skin cancer.

It is therefore important that people become aware of skin cancer symptoms and how to identify them. Below are some useful tips.

Know Skin Cancer Symptoms

First, look for unusual bumps or moles. While most people have some small moles on their bodies, they are decidedly different from cancerous ones. Harmless moles are usually light brown in color and they lay flat on the skin.

They tend not to increase in size and there is no pain associated with them. Cancerous moles tend to be raised and smooth and blood vessels can sometimes develop inside of them.

Over time, they may start to bleed or fester and many people mistake them for sores. This bleeding is one of the strongest skin cancer symptoms associated with moles.

Skin Cancer Symptoms and Moles

Second, note unnatural growths in size. A cancerous bump will also change rapidly over time. Within a few months, this bump may change its very size and shape. Noncancerous moles are usually circular in shape and they do not deviate from this form.

Growths that indicate skin cancer usually deviate from a circular outline and may resemble ink splotches. Because these marks also signify the rapid growth of unnatural cells, they tend to grow at exponential rates. They are one of the more obvious skin cancer symptoms of which people should be aware.

People who enjoy going out in the sun and frequently participate in outdoor sports should therefore be cautious. Unnatural or rapidly growing moles should not be ignored since they are often an indication of cancerous cells.

Early detection is also very important since treatment is most effective at the early stages. People should take further preventative measures by reducing the amount of time they spend outdoors and wearing sufficient amounts of sun screen.

Enjoying the sun is still very possible as long as wise and intelligent decisions are made.

Skin cancer can be a life threatening disease so it is important to know skin cancer symptoms to hopefully allow you get early treatment that may save your life.

One of the most common skin cancer symptoms is a change in colour of a wart or a mole.In most cases, this means they will either turn red or become much darker.

Another symptom is bleeding. This covers any unexplained bleeding from the skin in general, as well as warts or moles that have suddenly begun to bleed.

Get Educated on Skin Cancer Symptoms

Recognizing skin cancer symptoms means staying alert to changes in the appearance of moles and warts. They may become rough, have a change in texture, or their borders can become irregular.

They can also become larger. Even if you have had a wart or mole throughout your entire lifetime, it can still become cancerous.

Checking your skin periodically can alert you to any changes. If necessary, you can ask a physician or someone in your family to help you examine your skin.

This is especially important if you spend a considerable amount of time in the sun, or have moles on parts of your body where they cannot easily be seen.

Staying on Top of Skin Cancer Symptoms

Any skin change can be a symptom. This can include new raised or flat discolourations that were not there before, skin becoming itchy or scaly, and tenderness or pain when it is touched.

Changes that appear to be nothing more than new freckles, eczema, or other simple explanations, can actually be cancer signs.

Most warts, moles, and other skin imperfections are not cancerous. However, there are two points you must keep in mind.

First, skin cancers can progress very rapidly. Never hesitate in consulting your doctor if you notice any of these signs. Second, diagnosing cancer requires a medical evaluation. Regardless of the changes you may have noticed, you cannot diagnose it yourself.

Your physician can do a simple test that is nearly pain free. It is the only way of knowing whether the lesion is cancerous, or whether it is something very minor.

If you notice any of these symptoms, see a doctor immediately. In the meantime, to have your skin checked by a professional, contact us at Mole Map today.

Because skin cancer is associated with overexposure to the sun, people who remain indoors or are careful about sun protection often do not realize they are susceptible to melanoma.

Anyone can suffer from skin cancer, so it is important to learn how to identify skin cancer symptoms early. Early treatment can keep cancer from spreading and save lives.

Learn to Look for Skin Cancer Symptoms

A self examination for skin cancer symptoms is the easiest way to ensure early detection. Checking your entire body for changes in spots or growths approximately once per month allows you to see changes which might be cancerous.

Skin cancer appears in a variety of forms, so it is not easy to identify. During self examinations, instead of looking for something that looks like skin cancer, you should look for changes from month to month.

To examine yourself for possible skin cancer, you should begin at the head. Using a mirror, begin parting your hair to examine the scalp. Move on to the face and neck, then make your way down your entire body.

Do not forget areas that are hard to see, such as elbows, under the arms and your back. Also, check the bottoms of feet and palms of hands. Note moles, skin discoloration or any bumps or lumps. Some people find it helpful to record the location, size and colour of items each month. This helps in recognizing changes.

Get Skin Cancer Symptoms Checked Early

If you find changes in the skin from month to month with regard to colour or size of lumps, you should schedule an appointment with a physician. Although not every growth or spot will be cancer, the only way to be sure is to have an experienced doctor test the location.

Some skin cancer can be very aggressive, so catching such a spot early means physicians can remove and treat the cancer. This avoids wide spread cancer of the skin as well as cancer spreading into vital organs and other tissues. Self-examinations for skin cancer symptoms only take a few minutes a month, but it can save your life!

However, some symptoms may not necessarily be an indication that you have skin cancer.

Still, if you see any signs, it is important that you see a physician to get an accurate diagnosis. You may know some of the basic signs of skin cancer as well as others that are rarer. In either case, you should know what to look for.

Skin Cancer Symptoms: Moles

Moles are perhaps one of the most recognizable indicators of skin cancer. However, the appearance of moles alone is not usually a sign. The moles are more likely to be cancerous if they change in colour, shape, size or texture.

A mole that bleeds may also be a sign of a form of skin cancer called melanoma, which can also be recognized with large brownish spots that contain dark speckles.

You may also look for signs of other forms of skin cancer such as basic cell carcinoma. This condition is often indicated with pearly or waxy bumps at the affected site as well as lesions that are flat or flesh coloured or appear to look like brown scars. Unlike melanoma that can appear anywhere on the body, the signs of this condition tend to appear on the ears, face or scalp.

Skin Cancer Symptoms: Lesions

There are other signs such as lesions with irregular borders appearing on the skin. These lesions also typically have parts that are blue, blue-black, red or white.

Dark lesions on the tips of the fingers, palms, soles and toenails can also be an indication of skin cancer. Symptoms do not always appear on the skin as a mucous membrane lining on the anus, mouth, nose or vagina can be a symptom of skin cancer.

Symptoms can vary according to a lot of other factors, so you need to take certain factors into consideration.

For instance, men may have different symptoms than women for some forms of skin cancer and symptoms can also vary according to the colour of the skin. However, an anomaly on the skin should merit a visit to a healthcare practitioner for a clear diagnosis.

Irregular raised abnormalities on the skin including various discolorations and warts that do not seem to stop growing are some of the most common symptoms to look out for.

The symptoms of rare skin cancer are even more important to look at since they tend to spread quicker compared to the more common types of cancers.

Skin Cancer Symptoms and Signs

Less common skin cancers include Kaposi sarcoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and sebaceous gland carcinoma.

Kaposi sarcoma develops in the blood vessels and show up as purple or red patches on the skin and mucous membranes. It may be found in the inside lining of the cheeks.

Merkel cell carcinoma often shows as shiny, firm nodules that occur just beneath the skin and hair follicles. The abnormal growth is often found in the sun-exposed areas of the body.

Sebaceous gland carcinoma is another uncommon type of skin cancer. It starts in the oil glands and often appears as hard, painless nodules.

Unlike other abnormal growths, this type of carcinoma tends to occur most often in the eyelid so they are often mistaken for eyelid problems.

Skin Cancer Symptoms: Early Detection

The symptoms of rare skin cancers tend to appear as abnormal growths, which is reason enough to have one’s self tested to see if these growths are malignant or not.

Doctors can determine if these growths are malignant through a biopsy so that they can be immediately removed.

The rare types of skin cancers tend to be more aggressive compared to the more common types of skin cancers so early detection can play an important role in getting a better prognosis.

Treatments recommended for these rare skin cancers include radiation therapy, photodynamic therapy, and ablation therapy.

Radiation therapy has been found to be effective at treating basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinomas. Photodynamic therapy has also been found to be effective.

This is a common outpatient option that uses light sensitive chemicals to destroy the cancerous masses.

The appearance of rare skin cancer symptoms often causes anxiety in most people. However, the timely identification of these symptoms can make treatment easier and the prognosis brighter.

Anyone who sees any of the skin cancer symptoms mentioned above should visit their dermatologists immediately in order to get a professional diagnosis.
